Student Internships & Externships


Purpose

MIDWEST is offering opportunities for high school, college, undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities who have a strong interest in pursuing degrees in science, engineering and technology (STEM) fields, to participate in INTERNSHIPS in college or university laboratories.

Opportunities are also available for college and university students to participate in EXTERNSHIPS within STEM-related industry settings or government agencies.

MIDWEST will identify, screen and place qualified students in these supervised experiences with scientists/researchers, and will help to provide support and necessary accommodations.

Length of internship/externship will be determined on an individual basis.

Applicants have the option to also request grant money to support their internship/externship experience.

Who Can Apply

The MIDWEST Internships and Externships are intended for Midwest high school, college, and university undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities who demonstrate a strong interest in entering and/or majoring in STEM disciplines, and who are planning or considering STEM careers.


Participation Requirements

Students who are offered a MIDWEST Internship or Externship must agree to:

  • provide MIDWEST with a written report of their internship work (and research results, if applicable) within two months of the completion of the internship/externship experience.

  • share their experience (and research results, if applicable) at the MIDWEST annual conference and participate in MIDWEST project evaluation activities.

Evaluation Criteria

Student Internship and Externship applications, and grant applications for financial support of these experiences will be evaluated according to the following criteria :

  • Academic performance and potential ;
  • Potential to contribute to STEM ;
  • Quality of application, letters of recommendations and resume.

  1. Application Form

      The application must include a parent or guardian signature if you are under 18 years of age.

  2. Two letters of Recommendation

    Submit two letters of recommendation from a teacher, faculty member, or someone who has worked with you closely.

  3. Resume

    Submit an up-to-date copy of your resume.
